KOTA KINABALU (Dec 4): Taanusiya Chetty of Kuala Lumpur outshone 10 other Miss World Malaysia 2024 contestants to bring home the crown on Tuesday night.

The 23-year-old Bachelor of Education student triumphed over runner-up Kelly Eleanor Tseu from Kota Kinabalu to receive the crown from Miss World Malaysia 2023, Saroop Roshi. The third place went to Hantze Liow, also from Kuala Lumpur.

Two Sabahan finalists, Fillonie Francis and Lyn Sinsua, also made it to the top six.

Taanusiya is set to represent Malaysia at the 73rd edition of the Miss World competition in 2026.

Aside from winning the Miss World Malaysia 2024 title, Taanusiya also won seven subsidiary titles including the Top Model Award, Lavisha Ambassador, Miss Ayu Borneo Award, Cape Rhino Ambassador, Charity Queen Award, Best in Evening Gown and Miss LYC.

Standing 173cm tall, Taanusiya is fluent in four languages namely, Malay, English, Tamil and Mandarin.

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Christina Liew, lauded the event for its significant impact on both the tourism sector and local industries.

“This type of event not only boosts the tourism sector but also greatly benefits Sabah’s local industries. It strengthens the promotion of local brands on an international level while offering valuable opportunities for local talent to shine,” she said during her speech at the pageant.

She added that partnerships with local non-governmental organisations such as the Sabah Welfare Foundation, the KDCA Women’s Council and Sabah Social Entrepreneurs and Eco Development (SEED) could bring positive change to the community.

“My ministry remains committed to supporting such initiatives and encourages international events to be hosted in Sabah, further enhancing the state’s image as a premier tourism destination,” said Liew.

The minister also highlighted the broader purpose of the event, emphasising its role in empowering young women and inspiring them to effect meaningful change.

Among the distinguished attendees were Dr Sean Wong, CEO of HyperLive Entertainment and National Director of Miss World Malaysia, and co-organiser Sunstrong Entertainment led by Jment Lim.
