KOTA  KINABALU: Sabah opens its doors to international events that benefit the economic sector and local communities, said Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew.

She said these events which constitute a commitment to service, a celebration of diversity and a platform for meaningful change, not only promote tourism but also offer opportunities for trade, business or investments in Sabah.

Speaking to reporters after the Grand Finals of Miss World Malaysia 2024 here Tuesday, Liew said the event, which was not just about crowning a new queen, was a resounding success.

It was supported by the Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry (KePKAS) through the Sabah Tourism Board (STB).

She said the beauty pageant was about empowering young women, inspiring them to make a difference and reminding us all of the profound impact we can have when beauty meets purpose, adding that the 11 finalists represent the diverse voices of Malaysia and share one dream — to create positive change in our country.

“We congratulate the National Director of Miss World Malaysia Dr Sean Wong on his unwavering commitment, dedication, persistence and tireless efforts in organising the Miss World Malaysia events here in Sabah since 2022. He has been promoting Sabah to the world.

“We (Ministry and STB) encourage him to continue bringing international events to Sabah, and will continue to support his endeavours. Apart from beauty pageants, we also welcome organisers of other events like international golf tournament or sports activities for tourism promotion. We are open to discussion,”  said Liew.

Earlier, in her address, the Minister said Wong has not only elevated the Miss World Malaysia events to new heights but has also ensured they serve a greater purpose—showcasing Sabah’s unparalleled beauty and giving back to our local communities.

“Your steadfast belief in Sabah as a premier destination has captured global attention, shining a spotlight on our breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage and the warmth of our people.”

Liew said the Ministry acknowledged that events like these not only enhance tourism but also bring significant benefits to our local industries, such as boosting brand visibility on an international level and creating valuable opportunities for local talents to be involved.

“Additionally, your collaboration with local non-profit organisations such as Yayasan Kebajikan Sabah, KDCA Women’s Council, and Association of Sabah Social Entrepreneurs & Eco Development (SEED) creates a positive impact in our society.”

She also commended Jment Lim, the Founder of Sunstrong Entertainment, for his invaluable role as co-organiser.

“Your partnership with Dr Sean has not only made this event possible but has also strengthened its impact in supporting Sabah tourism and uplifting local communities.”

Liew made a vote of special thanks to Julia Morley CBE, Chairman and CEO of the Miss World Organisation, for her love and support for Sabah as reflected in her efforts to promote the state on a global platform.

“Miss World’s mission of ‘Beauty With A Purpose’ aligns perfectly with our values here in Sabah. Through their work, they have amplified the stories of our people, supported causes that matter deeply to us, and shown the world the magic of Sabah,” she said.

Morley brought the reigning Miss World 2024 Krystyna Pyszkova to Sabah in July this year.
